Disney is always looking for ways to take their experiences to the next level.
Most of the time, that means staying on top of (or even ahead of!) the latest technologies that wow the crowds. And, crowds were definitely wowed when Star Wars BD Droids just randomly started roaming around Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland one day! We later learned that these adorable little robots were being tested by Imagineers, and now we’ve got a new look at them!
Back in October 2023, Disney made our jaws drop by debuting these adorable little droids at Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland! A band of BD units took to the streets of Batuu to see all the sights and sounds of a galaxy far, far away.
The droids were being tested by Disney Imagineers as roaming characters in Galaxy’s Edge, but we haven’t heard or seen much from them since — until now, that is! At the Nvidia GTC Conference in San Diego (a global conference on artificial intelligence for those working in the industry), these little droids were the stars of the show all about new robot technology. You can see them walking onto the stage below!
Disney Imagineers worked with animators to design the droid units that combine “procedural animation, modular hardware, and reinforcement learning” so each character has its own distinct characteristics, making them unique!
The BD Droids are being showcased at the conference because they learned to walk using Nvidia’s Isaac Sim, a robotics simulation toolkit that designers can use to develop and train AI robots. You can watch the demonstration of the BD Droids in the video below!
In other Star Wars news, make sure you mark your calendars for April 5th because NEW scenes are coming to Star Tours featuring Din Djarin and Grogu, Ahsoka Tano, and Cassian Andor!
