It’s anniversary season!
We’re celebrating our 15th Anniversary at Disney Food Blog by looking back on some of the great times we’ve had over the years! From ride openings and new shows, to Walt Disney World theme park celebrations, and – – OF COURSE – – food, we’re in the mood to reminisce about it all!
A Beef Fat Candle
That’s right, we ate a candle.
We tried this delicacy a few years ago when it was offered as part of the Artisan Cheese and Charcuterie Plate at EPCOT’s Le Cellier restaurant.
The 100% edible candle was made in the Le Cellier kitchen out of slow rendered Beef Fat that was flavored with garlic and rosemary. The idea is to let the candle melt, spreading the beef fat all over the other foods on the plate.
We tried some of the fat by itself — we actually tasted much more of the rosemary flavor than we did the beef — as well as spreading it across the other meat, cheeses, and crackers that were present on the board. We found it very creamy, slightly waxy, and easily spreadable. It added a FABULOUS depth of flavor and just felt luxurious!
Vegetarian Haggis
Way back in 2013, vegetarian haggis was offered at the then-new Scotland booth at EPCOT’s International Food & Wine Festival. At the time, EPCOT’s Executive Chef Jens Dahlmann said of the dish, “Vegetarian haggis is becoming more and more popular in Scotland. When I tasted the product, I was really blown away. It really tastes like a beautiful, grainy vegetable patty. Think of a veggie burger, but a really, really good one. It will be peppery and very tasty. We serve it with neeps and tatties, or rutabagas and potatoes, so it’s very traditional, but yet it’s a different spin.”
Fried Alligator
Back at the 2021 Flavors of Florida event, we headed to Chef Art Smith’s Homecomin’ at Disney Springs to sample some fried gator bites.
These pieces of marinated gator bites were lightly seasoned and deep fried, similar to chicken tenders. At the time, we found them to be perfectly fried and not greasy at all. The batter was very similar to their fried chicken batter, but our server shared that there is some orange zest added to the gator. The gator itself was not gamey at all. The texture was great — it basically tasted like salty chicken!
A $300 Sushi Boat
When Shiki-Sai: Sushi Izakaya opened at EPCOT’s Japan Pavilion in 2023, there was one item on the menu that we knew we had to try: the massive sushi boat.
The $300 Fune, which is an assortment of sushi and sashimi that feeds 4-6 people. When we first got the dish last year, we were pretty blown away by the presentation and the quality of the food.
Pufferfish
Okay, this next one wasn’t on Disney property, but it definitely happened because I was doing Disney things! I was visiting Tokyo Disney and took a boat tour one evening where I was served pufferfish — which is apparently poisonous?!? — so I thought it was wild that they were preparing something so delicate on a tiny boat?! It was delicious, and I’m still here to tell the tale, so…SUCCESS all around!
These are just a sampling of some of the unbelievable things we’ve been lucky enough to eat thanks to DFB! Stay tuned for more birthday celebrations!
