A Cars-themed area is coming to Magic Kingdom at Disney World, and fans have some thoughts. The biggest being: how does Cars fit into Frontierland?
The new area, called Piston Peak, will take over Tom Sawyer Island, the Liberty Square Riverboat, and the Rivers of America. Piston Peak will be nestled right by Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. That doesn’t really scream Cars, does it?
We may be freaking out the themeing but fear not — Disney Imagineering has already thought about it. The biggest thing they are doing is creating a National Park-themed land, based explicitly on Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park.
When Big Thunder Mountain was heavily influenced by Bryce Canyon National Park in Utah, right next to Colorado.
One way they’re connecting the areas is with geysers and tire marks. You’ll be able to walk around Big Thunder, and they’re currently planning on adding the geyser field and rainbow pools along with tire marks from cars in the area.
While riding Big Thunder Mountain, there are water elements and even more geysers, and Piston Peak will use those features as well.
Disney is utilizing “Parkitecture,” a term coined by the National Park Service to design buildings that blend harmoniously with their surroundings. This will really help Piston Peak feel more natural.
A big part that Disney is aware of is sightlines. Trees will be a natural barrier between the off-road rally attraction and other parts of Frontierland and Liberty Square. They also say, “Rugged mountains with dramatic peaks will be nestled along a calming waterway across from Grizzly Hall, and soaring geysers from the famed Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will stretch into the trails of our off-road rally.”
If we know anything about Disney, they likely have more tricks up their sleeves that we don’t even know about. At the very least, we’re crossing our fingers that Piston Peak won’t be similar to the transition area between Fantasyland and Tomorrowland.
We’ll be keeping an eye on the project, and we’ll be dropping all the details here, so make sure you keep following Disney Food Blog for more Disney news.

Perhaps they could add a simulated helicopter ride over the Piston Peak area. That would fit into the Frontierland theme…as long as they used steam powered helicopters.
