It feels like we’ve been waiting forever for Test Track to reopen, and your chance to hop in, pull on the yellow strap, and experience this fully reimagined attraction is getting closer and closer.
On July 22nd, we’re going to be racing to EPCOT to experience the ride when it’s open to the public, but in the meantime, we’ve been able to catch a sneak peek with a preview session. What’s new and what stayed the same? Grab your driver’s license and let’s find out!
First up, look at that new entrance sign!
Don’t worry, you can still hear the cars zooming by on the track. During our tour of the new ride, one of the ride’s producers, Lisa, made a point to tell us that the canopy was brand new — and that the lighting at night is spectacular.
How about this queue? Disney said the new queue would “feature six distinct exhibits, and within each room celebrate the vehicles — and the people behind the vehicles.” Disney opened up the queue quite a bit in order to let more light in — including reopening the section of the track that goes by a window in the first part of the queue. This is similar to how the queue was during the ride’s first iteration.
The original queue didn’t have a specific theme as much as Chevrolet cars, but now we can take a deep dive into the history of moving vehicles. This feels like a homage to the original World of Motion pavilion. The queue takes you from the early 1900s to the present day. It’s a look back in time, along with the dreams of what the future may hold.
The last part of the queue focuses on what we are creating and crafting today — what materials and energy are being used as we actively figure out the future. The queue even features a GM concept vehicle from 1969 on display. We also learned that all of the artwork on the walls is actual concept art from GM!
The question on everyone’s mind: Can you still design your own car and link it to your ride?
The answer to that is NO. There is no more “design your own car” section of the attraction or the queue. Instead, you’ll head straight to the loading area.
Hop on in because now we’re getting to the good stuff. This is the moment we’ve been waiting for! Let’s ride!
Right off the bat, we noticed that the song “It’s Fun to Be Free” (the original World of Motion theme song) was played as an instrumental after the narrator says the words “It’s Fun to Be Free,” but the original lyrics are not performed. There’s also a new intentional ride smell to join the likes of Spaceship Earth and Soarin’ — it’s a very pleasant pine smell that didn’t smell like a cleaning solution but more like a candle you would purchase on sale in a store.
In the large dome room, there was a reference to the old EPCOT attraction, Horizons! Lisa shared with us that the writers put that Easter egg in as a little reference to the former ride in the “dome room.”
We also learned that one of the six new scenes depicts how cars can use enhanced cameras and sensors to “see” the world around them, and Disney made that come to life with over 29,000 points of light in one scene. You’ll notice it as you’re going through the alpine scene with all the trees (and don’t forget to take a big whiff of the pine tree scent being piped in!).
How different did this newly reimagined ride feel compared to the previous version? While we feel that fans of the original ride will still think that version is superior (and we agree), we do feel that this is an improvement over the previous edition. We feel it’s a really great upgrade for the technology and narrative used in the ride, and we’re excited that this is how Test Track is now being represented.

Was the ride smoother? My husband has never been able to ride because of how the ride is bumpy etc..
Any changes to accessibility?
I think it was a mistake to drop the car design. It was entertaining while having to wait. Typical Disney these days!
I can’t say I’m sorry that they took away the design-your-own car part of the ride. I never particularly enjoyed that, and I even skipped it most of the time.
Gen 1 is still the best, including the pre-ride video. It was set up like a real test track. Gen 3 is a significant improvement over Gen 2. Test Track is back in our rotation of EPCOT attractions!
Rode this in 2000 and again in 2005. Loved it! As a professional driver, it felt like real road, climate and vision driving. I suffer from motion sickness….but not on this ride! Don’t remember much about the queue but lines were much shorter back then. I do remember it also felt more real world.
Sadly, doubt we’ll try the new version. In your several postings, you’ve made it sound much more thrill ride than real driving. Too many flashing lights and other changes that would make one sick. Not worth taking a chance. Who wants to ruin the day by taking a couple hours to recover? And not interested in spending way too much time in a queue as we really have no interest in being educated on cars through the century!
I hope the younger folks will enjoy but as usual, we love the way the park was….not all the changes that , in the end, won’t look like Walt’s Disney we fell in love with and couldn’t wait to go back to time and again.
