Six Flags is expected to close its California’s Great America park at the end of the 2027 season, People reports.
The park is located in Santa Clara, California, and its lease is coming to an end on June 30th, 2028. Six Flags Chief Financial Officer Brian Witherow told investors in May that there were no plans to extend the lease.
“Unless we decide to extend, and exercise one of our options to extend that lease, that park’s last year without that extension would be after the ‘27 season,” Witherow said at Six Flags Investor Day 2025 on May 20th, 2025. The news came shortly after it was announced that Six Flags America in Bowie, Maryland, would be closing at the end of the 2025 season. Witherow said of the Maryland and California parks, “Those are two parks that are very low on the ranking of margins.”
Six Flags California’s Great America would close in October 2027 after the Halloween season. The park — which spans more than 100 acres — opened in 1976 under the Marriott Corporation as Marriott’s Great America.
In 2024, the park’s parent company, Cedar Fair, merged with Six Flags in a deal worth $8 billion. Two years before that, Cedar Fair sold the 112 acres of land the park sits on for $310 million to Prologis, a real estate and supply chain logistics company. The amusement park company agreed to lease back the land for six to 11 years and announced plans to close the park at the end of the 2028 lease. The company has the option to extend the terms for another five years, but they have yet to do so.
Prologis is “focused on identifying and partnering with planning and design experts to help us create a master plan for the property,” if Six Flags’ lease is not extended.
The Six Flags Great America location outside of Chicago opened the same year as the California version of the park; however, the Illinois park will receive enhancements ahead of its 50th season celebration.
Official closure details have yet to be announced by Six Flags, so stay tuned for updates.
