There are some unspoken rules when you’re getting dressed to go to Disney World.
You’ll want to choose shoes that are broken in already and an outfit that goes well with the weather (which is most often hot and swampy). If you’re adding accessories, there are plenty of fun options from Mickey ears to Loungefly bags. But today, we’re going beyond those basic rules and sharing some outfit planning notes you may not think about.
Fit the Park Vibe if You Can
This first “rule” is more of a “do it if you can, but you don’t have to” kind of thing, but we love when people match the vibe of the park they’re visiting! Think animal prints and Simba shirts for Animal Kingdom, Toy Story and Star Wars for Hollywood Studios, and all things pink, blue, or sparkly for Magic Kingdom.
So if you have any outfits that fit a popular land or ride in one of the parks, try to save those outfits for the “right” days! You can still wear your Buzz Lightyear t-shirt to EPCOT if you want, but it’s more fun if you wear it where you can get a picture with the Space Ranger himself.
Resorts Are Free Game
Now, contrasting with the prior point, resorts are fair game! Even though each of the resorts has its own special theming, you’re probably not going to notice too many people dressing to match their hotel — in fact, you’ll see people wearing clothes for all kinds of different places around Disney World.
So it’s not weird to wear your Galaxy’s Edge-themed outfit while walking around Caribbean Beach because, for all the people there know, you’re heading to visit Hollywood Studios that same day! Since people often hop to resorts for a meal or pop back in midday for a break, feel free to wear those park-themed outfits to any of the hotels.
Skip the Wrong IPs
One of the biggest pet peeves for many Disney fans is when people wear IPs to the parks that Disney doesn’t own. The Minions? Not Disney. Harry Potter? Not Disney. DC Comics and movies? Not Disney!
And for the love of all that is good, Shrek is DEFINITELY not Disney-owned. C’mon, guys, the movie’s entire plot basically revolves around making fun of Disney princess films. Just do an extra Google search before you pack to make sure you’re not mixing up the wrong franchises.
Absolutely NO Universal
Last but not least, we’ve got to share the most important unspoken rule for getting dressed for your Disney vacation…don’t wear your Universal merchandise! Slytherin jerseys, Hogwarts robes, Jurassic Park shirts, Epic Universe sweatshirts, or anything that has the Universal Parks logos.
Disney and Universal are direct competitors — they’re NOT the same company. Keep those Universal Orlando clothes and accessories separate if you want to follow the unspoken dress code!

We do a week and a half trip to Universal every year. During that trip, we visit Epcot for a day. I wear my Universal baseball cap to Epcot. It doesn’t bother me and I doubt it bothers anyone else. Even if it did, I’m not bringing a Disney cap just for that one day.
