September feels like one of the best months to visit Disney World—lighter crowds, slightly cooler weather, and plenty of Halloween fun.

But here’s the thing: September 2025 isn’t going to look quite like a “normal” fall trip. Between new openings, big closures, and seasonal parties, there are a few easy mistakes that could trip you up. If you’re planning a visit this September, here are the big things you’ll want to avoid so you don’t end up missing out.
Skipping the New Pirates Lounge
If you’ve been following Disney updates, you’ve probably heard the buzz about The Beak and Barrel, a brand-new Pirates of the Caribbean–themed lounge that opens August 29th, 2025. This is going to be the spot everyone wants to check out during a Magic Kingdom day, and September is the first full month it’ll be open.
Here’s where the mistake comes in: thinking you can just walk up and hang out as long as you want. Disney has already confirmed that visits will be limited to 45 minutes, and Advance Dining Reservations filled up quick. That means demand is going to be high, and space inside will be tight.
Even if you do get in, don’t expect to linger with your pirate punch all night. The time cap is strict, so plan ahead and decide what you want to try before you sit down. This is one of those rare cases where doing your homework and booking early really makes or breaks the experience.
Overlooking Ride Closures
It’s easy to think of September as a calm, in-between month when Disney doesn’t have too much under construction, but 2025 is the exact opposite. In fact, some of the park’s most popular attractions will be unavailable. The mistake here is assuming your favorites will be open like usual.
Let’s start with Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. This coaster closed way back in January 2025 and won’t reopen until sometime in 2026. Not only is the ride itself off the table, but Disney is using this downtime to prep the surrounding land for the new Piston Peak Cars area, plus future connections to Villains Land. If you’re heading into Magic Kingdom expecting to ride the wildest ride in the wilderness, you’re going to be disappointed.
Then there’s Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin in Tomorrowland. That ride closed in August 2025 for a major overhaul, and it won’t return until next year either. Imagineers are completely reworking it with new blasters, interactive targets, and even a brand-new character named Buddy. It sounds awesome, but it means no zapping Zurg for now.
If you’re traveling with kids, don’t forget that the Dumbo the Flying Elephant playground in Fantasyland is still closed too. Disney hasn’t given an exact reopening date, only “later this year.” That means the air-conditioned play break parents love is unavailable for September visits.
Over at EPCOT, Spaceship Earth is also under refurbishment starting August 25th, with no firm reopening date announced yet. That’s one of the most iconic rides in the park, so expect heavier waits at nearby attractions as crowds spread elsewhere.
And finally, let’s not forget that Tom Sawyer Island and the Liberty Square Riverboat closed permanently in July to make way for Piston Peak. This wasn’t just a temporary refurb—those classic attractions are gone for good. If your family has fond memories of exploring the island or riding the riverboat, you won’t be able to repeat them this fall.
Misjudging Party Nights
Here’s another easy slip-up: not checking the calendar for Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party before planning your Magic Kingdom days. The event runs on select nights from August through October, and in September, the party takes over the park almost every other night.

The party map!
On party days, Magic Kingdom closes at 6PM for regular day guests. That means if you only bought a standard park ticket and didn’t realize it was a party night, you’ll lose hours of evening park time. Nothing stings worse than planning to see Happily Ever After fireworks, only to be ushered out before the show even starts.
Now, if you actually buy a party ticket, you’ll get to enjoy trick-or-treating, rare characters, and the Boo-To-You Parade. But if you don’t, make sure to schedule your Magic Kingdom day for a non-party night so you can enjoy a full day and the regular nighttime entertainment.
Forgetting About Construction Impacts
Beyond just the ride closures, September is going to feel a little different thanks to all the construction happening around Magic Kingdom. Since the Rivers of America has been drained and work on Piston Peak is in full swing, certain areas of the park may look less magical than usual. Sightlines are changing, walls are up, and the railroad station in Frontierland is closed.
It’s not necessarily a reason to skip your trip, but it’s something to manage expectations around. Don’t be surprised if pathways feel crowded in places they normally wouldn’t. And if you’re looking to capture classic photos, you may want to scout spots in advance to avoid construction zones sneaking into your shot.
The Bottom Line
The biggest mistake you can make in September is assuming this will be a “normal” off-season Disney trip. With brand-new openings like The Beak and Barrel, major refurbishments knocking out guest favorites, Halloween parties closing Magic Kingdom early, and construction walls reshaping entire lands, September 2025 is anything but typical. If you go in prepared, you’ll still have a magical trip. But if you show up expecting the same old Disney World, you’ll run into frustrations fast. Do your homework, check those dates, and plan around the changes. That way, the only surprise you’ll have in September is just how much fun you still manage to pack in.
