Who’s already planning their holiday travel? Raise those hands!

If you’re going out of town for Thanksgiving, Christmas, the New Year, or any of the other big holidays, then you’re definitely not alone! The last few weeks of the year tend to be peak travel season in the United States, and that means that it will be EXPENSIVE to fly. So when is the best time to buy those flights? We’ve got the answer.
The Washington Post reports that the best time to purchase your holiday flights is actually right now! The cheapest window for domestic airfare is typically 3-6 months in advance if you’re purchasing with cash outright instead of using points or rewards.

Now, if you’re not able to purchase right now and you need to buy tickets in October and November, you’re not entirely out of luck. After analyzing Google Flight data, the Post reports that the cheapest day to purchase airfare for Thanksgiving “last-minute” is 35 days ahead of time. This year, that’s October 22nd if you plan to fly the day before the holiday.

For Christmas, it’s best to purchase 51 days in advance. This means if you’re flying on Christmas Eve, you’ll need to buy your tickets on November 3rd. The same goes for New Year’s Eve, so your purchase date for that holiday would be November 10th. Contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t seem to matter which day of the week you book.

One of the most important things to consider, though, is the day of the week that you travel. Flights tend to be significantly cheaper for Monday-Wednesday departures. Those days are on average 13% cheaper than weekdays, which can make a big difference if you’re buying multiple tickets or upgrading your fare.

So if you’re heading elsewhere for the holidays, take these things into consideration. We’re still in that magic 3-6 month window for the Christmas and New Year holidays as well.
