Okay, we’re not going to lie, we’ve been to Japan a few times, and the food is just…like…well, it’s superior, and yes, we’re saying that even about the food in Tokyo Disneyland.
But the food is great pretty much everywhere in Japan, including at convenience stores. There’s one little item everyone especially loves, and it’s the egg sandwich — don’t come at us because those sandwiches are HIGHLY popular. Well, the company that owns 7-Eleven wants to bring Japanese-style convenience stores to the U.S., including those egg sandwiches!
7-Eleven’s parent company is based in Japan, and, according to The New York Times, that includes bringing the infamous egg sandwich to 7-Eleven locations in the U.S. YES! Anyone who has ever visited Japan has learned about these delicious sandwiches, which are highly popular with both tourists and locals. They’re made with Japanese milk bread that, along with Japanese mayonnaise, creates a pillow for the fresh egg salad to exist between.
Convenience stores are a significant part of Japanese daily life because they are known for offering high-quality, fresh food. We’re talking bento boxes, as well as the egg salad sandwiches that celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain once called “pillows of love.” Stephen Dacus, the chief executive of Seven & i Holdings, the 7-Eleven parent company, is behind a push to bring this same experience to U.S. 7-Eleven locations.
Let’s face it, American convenience stores aren’t necessarily known for their food (save for maybe Buc-ees), so Dacus wants to bring the idea of convenience stores as food destinations to 7-Elevens. “Whether it’s hot food or cold food or any kind of food, we have to lean into how we improve the quality and the experience,” he said. “That’s what Japan does extraordinarily well.”
The company has plans to invest more than $13 billion in upgrading U.S. 7-Elevens, including refreshing existing locations, adding in-store restaurants, and creating a larger network of food providers for the stores. Dacus also confirmed that egg sandwiches would be coming to U.S. stores.
There isn’t a specific timeline when this might happen in U.S. 7-Eleven stores, and at the moment, it seems to only be a plan. However, we’re 100% behind the egg sandwich making its way to the U.S., so we hope it’s sooner, rather than later.

Funny how so many things are now better overseas than in the U.S…. And given the last four years of insane inflation cheaper, too….. Yes, Tokyo Disneyland really is that much better….
Unfortunately it won’t be the same (food or experience) Japanese take huge pride in their work and it shows, we’ll still get some unhappy minimum wage drop out slathering egg salad on bread and tossing it in the cooler in the same ol’ 7-11 store we cringe at.
I live in the UK and egg sandwiches are a just a simple basic lunch box classic. They are my favourite sandwiches to make and eat. I can never get over the fact that I’ve never seen one in the US.
