When we plan our trips to Disney World, we also have to plan how we’re going to get there. That usually means flying. No, not with our own personal wings. In an airplane. (Maybe someday, though, right?)
Now, the default airport you probably think of when going to Disney World is Orlando International Airport. But believe it or not, Orlando has another airport, Orlando Sanford International Airport. According to The Orlando Business Journal, a key study has been approved for a new roadway project that would make driving to and from Orlando International Sanford Airport a lot easier.
The Central Florida Expressway Authority Board has approved both project development and an environmental study for a two-lane Sanford Airport Connector route between the Concorde and Kensington Reserve Communities that would run from State Road 417 to Red Cleveland Boulevard at the airport.
The project comes as the airport continues to grow over the coming years. In 2024, Orlando Sanford International Airport served 2.88 million people. The airport also completed a $65 million expansion in 2021. The airport is expected to have an 87% increase in passenger boarding by 2050, as well as an increase of 400% in air freight tonnage by 2037. Such growth could result in congestion on the main road leading to the airport, Lake Mary Boulevard.
Steve Fussell, vice president and chief strategy officer with Orlando Sanford International Airport, said, “The project) directly addresses this congestion by improving access to SFB and the rapidly developing Northeast Seminole County,” Fussell said. “The 417 connector will help manage the traffic impact of 5,000 to 10,000 new homes on East Lake Mary Boulevard.”
The next step for the project is the design phase, as well as acquiring right-of-way permission from property owners. At the moment, no timeline has been set for this step.
If all goes according to plan, though, this could be a game-changer for people flying to Disney World. The more options you have when booking flights, the better deal you can find!
