Disney’s Animal Kingdom almost never lets us down when it comes to snacks, and so when we saw a new snack was coming to The Smiling Crocodile, we REALLY hoped we wouldn’t be disappointed.
Arepas were just added to the menu over here, but they’re only served for FOUR HOURS each day. You know what we have to say to that? Well, after trying these, we say that that’s NOT ENOUGH, Disney!
The Smiling Crocodile has had quite the shifting menu for quite some time, and it appears that two Arepas are the new stars over here. You can grab the Pulled Pork Cheese Arepa for $13.49, which is made with Pulled Pork, Queso Fresco, and Salsa Verde and served with Plantain Chips, and the Pulled Chicken Cheese Arepa is also available for $13.49, and is made with Pulled Chicken in Avocado Dressing, Queso Fresco, and Salsa Verde served with Plantain Chips.
WOW, were these incredible! These were the best we’ve had from here in recent history, and that’s saying something since we feel this spot often goes underrated. The flavors are strong, the meat is high quality, and the portion is MASSIVE. It doesn’t look like it at first, but once you unwrap it, you realize that this is a great meal for the price. The chicken was tender and juicy without being grisly at all, and the pulled pork had a fantastic, juicy, slightly smoky flavor to it. In fact, it was so juicy, it was dripping out the bottom of the arepa!
The chicken arepa had an extra avocado dressing on it that adds a little oomph that we really enjoyed. It’s creamy and smooth, and mixed with the freshness and bright flavor of the salsa verde? It was divine! Otherwise, the ingredients are the same on them, and you’ll find two types of cheese on each — there’s mozzarella melted into the dish, and then queso fresco on top.
The only complaint we have with this spot is that there’s no seating near Smiling Crocodile, so we took them next door to Flame Tree Barbecue. There is TONS of seating over here, but we could see that it would bother some people that there’s no actual seating at this stand.
Not to mention that these plantain chips were also wonderful! They’re crunchy, salty, and so delicious — we even think they’re better than some of the housemade chips on property (which are hard to beat). We’d get both of these meals again and again, and couldn’t recommend them enough, so Disney, PLEASE don’t take them away!
