Ugh, we hate it when a rumor comes true.
We’ve been hearing for months that Doctor Who might stop working with Disney+, and Deadline reports it’s now official.
Disney+ will no longer be involved with Doctor Who. Disney+ initially partnered with BBC Plus on two seasons, plus an upcoming spin-off called The War Between the Land and the Sea.
BBC confirmed that the show will continue and return with a Christmas special in 2026, written by Russell T. Davies. More information will be released in the future.
Lindsay Salt, BBC drama director, thanks Disney for “being terrific global partners and collaborators over the past two seasons, and for the upcoming The Water Between the Land and the Sea.”
“The BBC remains fully committed to Doctor Who, which continues to be one of our most loved ramamas, and we are delighted that Russell T. Davies has agreed to write us another spectacular Christmas special for 2026. We can assure fans, the Doctor is not going anywhere and we will be announcing plans for the next series in due course, which will ensure that TARDIS remains at the heart of the BBC.”
Danies regenerated Doctor Who with lots of big stars and storylines, but it hasn’t quite performed as well as the BBC hoped. It didn’t seem very successful for either the BBC or Disney+.
While it’s a bummer that Disney+ will no longer be involved, we’re glad that Doctor Who isn’t going away and that the BBC will continue to run the show. Make sure you keep following DFB for more.

I used to watch Doctor Who and loved it but after Peter Capaldi left, the show went downhill. I tried to watch the next season and couldn’t get into it. Moved to slow and too many characters and then they introduced a Doctor played by a gay actor and I stopped watching. THAT season was just poorly done and written. I watched the first episode and didn’t understand what was evening happening plus the acting was just bad.
I don’t like Disney-bashing as a practice, but Disney really did Doctor Who dirty by dragging their feet and not deciding if they wanted to renew the show for so long the 3rd season was delayed indefinitely and Ncuti Gatwa left the show because he was tired of waiting and had lost jobs while in limbo. Now the future of the beloved show is uncertain. I was actually excited when I heard Doctor Who was going to be on Disney. It seemed a perfect fit. But they didn’t seem to know what to do with it and did very little to promote it. So disappointing!
Thank goodness! Disney & Doctor WHO were a bad fit. The BBC alone will do a much better job.
