Sleeping at Disney World sounds like the easiest part of your trip, right? Well, you might need to think again.
Between the excitement, the early mornings, and the unique hotel experience, getting a good night’s sleep at Disney World can be trickier than it sounds. Whether you’re staying at a Value Resort or one of Disney’s Deluxe hotels, there are a few things first-timers should know before their head ever hits the pillow. Let’s talk about what you might not expect when trying to sleep at a Disney World hotel and how you can prepare for it.
It Can Get Loud, Especially at the Value Resorts
Let’s start with the big one: Disney hotels can be noisy. Value Resorts like Disney’s Pop Century and the All-Star hotels are often packed with families, sports groups, and tour groups, which means you’ll likely hear doors slamming, kids running, or luggage wheels rolling down the sidewalks late into the night. Even Moderate and Deluxe Resorts aren’t immune. Depending on where your room is, you might catch the sounds of fireworks, pool parties, or those early-morning luggage carts.
If you’re a light sleeper, this can come as a surprise. We recommend packing a pair of earplugs or downloading a free white noise app on your phone. You’d be amazed how well a little steady background noise can block out hallway chatter or the thud of excited feet heading to the buses at 6 AM.
The TVs Are Bright
If you’re someone who likes to fall asleep with the TV on, you might want to prepare yourself for what’s waiting in your Disney hotel room. The current TVs are modern, high-definition, and incredibly bright, which sounds great during the day but not so much when you’re trying to doze off with the lights off.
There’s no dimming feature for the screen, so that glow can light up half the room. If you’re traveling with someone else who’s already asleep, you might find yourself caught in a battle between wanting background noise and wanting darkness. Your best bet is to stream something on your phone or tablet instead and keep the brightness low. It’s a lot easier on the eyes and your sleeping partner.
You’re Probably Waking Up Earlier Than You Think
Here’s the thing: “vacation sleep” doesn’t really exist at Disney World. Even the most laid-back guests find themselves getting up earlier than usual to rope drop their favorite rides, grab an early breakfast reservation, or catch the first bus to Magic Kingdom. That means you might be setting alarms before sunrise, especially if you’re trying to make the most of your day.
On top of that, while Disney hotel rooms have blackout curtains, you’ll still likely get a bit of light creeping in through the edges in the morning. Combine that with the sound of other guests heading to the parks, and sleeping in might not be an option. If you’re not a morning person, bring an eye mask and give yourself permission to sneak in an afternoon nap. Trust us, you’ll need it.
It’s Disney, and Excitement Doesn’t Turn Off
Even if your room is quiet, your brain might not be. You’re surrounded by Disney magic, and that energy can make it hard to relax. You might find yourself lying awake thinking about tomorrow’s rides, replaying your favorite moments from the day, or mentally rechecking your park bag for the morning.
This is normal. Disney World is designed to keep your adrenaline up from sunrise to fireworks. Try giving yourself some downtime before bed. Take a walk around your resort, dim the lights, or listen to something calming before you try to sleep. You’ll fall asleep faster and wake up feeling more ready for another long but magical day.
A Few Extra Tips
- Ask for a top-floor room if possible. You’ll avoid the sound of footsteps above you.
- Use the “Room Occupied” sign in the mornings if you plan to sleep in a little later. Housekeeping can start early.
- Bring your own pillowcase or small blanket if you’re particular about comfort. It can help your body adjust faster to a new sleeping environment.
- Don’t underestimate how tired you’ll be. Even if you think you’ll stay up watching resort TV or heading to the bar, most guests end up crashing hard after a long park day.
A Disney World hotel stay can be full of magic, but it’s not feel exactly like a spa retreat. Between the noise, the early mornings, and the endless excitement, sleep might be more of a challenge than you expect. Still, with a few easy tricks, you can make sure you get the rest you need to tackle the parks each day.
