A December Disney World trip sounds dreamy, but it’s surprisingly easy to walk into major headaches if you aren’t prepared.

Walt Disney World entrance
Disney World in December is packed with holiday crowds, shifting park hours, seasonal offerings, and a long list of construction projects that affect how you move through the parks. Add in several key ride closures and you’ve got a recipe for frustration if you don’t plan ahead. We’re laying out the biggest mistake people make during this festive month and helping you avoid it with a clear game plan.
Construction All Over the Resort
Construction continues to be one of the biggest challenges for guests this year, and you’ll feel it in multiple parks. Magic Kingdom is still surrounded by construction walls as the Piston Peak expansion continues to grow beyond Frontierland. This work affects more than the expansion zone itself. You’ll deal with rerouted walkways, narrow pathing near the Rivers of America, and heavier congestion throughout Liberty Square and the surrounding areas.
Animal Kingdom is also undergoing a major transformation. The transition from DinoLand U.S.A. to Tropical Americas is in full swing, and that means sizable portions of the park feel closed off or shifted around. Trilo-Bites and Dino-Bite Snacks have already closed permanently, and by early 2026, Restaurantosaurus and DINOSAUR will close as well. December guests should expect reduced flexibility in that corner of the park, which changes how you might normally navigate from land to land.
Hollywood Studios is no exception. The Muppets Courtyard area remains closed as work continues on the future Monsters Inc. Land. As a result, the walkways between Grand Avenue and the rest of the park feel tight and limited. There’s also work happening in Animation Courtyard. All of this work also affects how you access food locations that sit right on the edges of these construction zones.
Construction walls don’t seem like a big deal until you’re in the middle of a holiday crowd trying to figure out how to get from one area to another. Keep your map handy and expect your usual walking routes to shift.
Ride Closures You Must Plan Around
Ignoring the refurbishment schedule is another December pitfall. Several attractions are closed this month, and pretending they won’t impact your day is a mistake many guests make.
- Kali River Rapids in Animal Kingdom remains closed through December 2025. The ride began its refurbishment in October, and although Disney expects it to reopen sometime in December, the exact date is still unconfirmed. If this is a must-do for your crew, prepare for the possibility that it will not be operating during your trip.
- Big Thunder Mountain Railroad continues its long-term closure after shuttering in January 2025. It is scheduled to reopen in 2026 with a refreshed experience. This project connects to even bigger work happening nearby, as Disney prepares for the upcoming Villains Land and begins the large-scale transformation around the Rivers of America. The entire back side of Frontierland looks very different right now, and guests should expect that to continue.
- Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin is also closed for enhancements until 2026. When it returns, it will include new vehicles, handheld blasters, upgraded targets, real-time scoring, and a new character named Buddy who trains you before each mission. The updates sound exciting, but for December, the ride remains closed altogether.
If your family has traditions tied to any of these attractions, prepare backup plans in advance.
Magic Kingdom’s Early Closures for Party Nights
December is also packed with Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party nights, and Magic Kingdom closes early on each of those dates. Guests without party tickets must leave in the late afternoon. If you aren’t aware of this before you arrive, you might be disappointed when you discover that a full Magic Kingdom day simply isn’t available.
Check the party schedule, plan your Magic Kingdom visit for a non-party day, or consider buying party tickets if you want nighttime access.
Plan Ahead for a Smooth December Trip
December can be one of the most magical times to visit Disney World, but it can also be one of the most chaotic if you assume everything works the same way it does the rest of the year. Construction zones, closed attractions, altered pathways, and party nights can change your plans if you don’t prepare before arriving.
In the meantime, we’re always on the lookout for the latest Disney news, so stay tuned for more.
